Will had breakfast with Mr Wells. He cooked up a big boyâs breakfast, which included mushrooms, tomatoes and potatoes. He and Mr Wells enjoyed it thoroughly.
âSo what will you do now?â asked Mr Wells, upon the completion of their considerable repast.
Will wiped a napkin over his mouth. âContinue,â he said. âSearch for Runeâs murderer. I have sworn to do this and so I shall.â
âAnd for all the rest?â
âIf it is connected, and I agree that perhaps it might well be, then I shall do what I can. You had my palm-top computer, which somehow came from the twentieth century, which means that I must have been there, or will be there, or something. Iâm sure it will all become clear eventually. But can I ask you this? Might I rely upon your assistance if the need should arise?â
âYou feel now that you can trust me?â
âI have no reason not to. I will ache for some time from the violence you visited upon me, but your port has at least cleared my hangover.â
âI thought you a potential assassin,â said Wells. âYou can understand that.â
âI can.â Will rose from his chair. âI will take my leave now. Will you be all right, with your ankle and everything?â
âI will telephone for the services of my good friend Dr Watson.â
âNot the Dr Watson.â
âThe,â said Wells.
âYouâll have to call someone else,â said Will. âHeâs away with Mr Holmes, solving the case of the Hound of the Baskervilles. The butler did it, by the way.â
âMy turn to be speechless, I think,â said Mr Wells.
âA pleasure to meet you,â said Will. âFarewell.â
âSo, where are we off to now, chief?â asked Barry, when Will was once more in the street. âChiswick, is it?â
âNo,â said Will. âI donât think so.â
âBut, chief, Iâve told you everything. Weâre on the same side, we share the same goals. Sort of.â
âBarry,â Will spoke behind his hand to avoid the attention of passers-by, âwe will do things my way or not at all. You are free to depart whenever you wish.â
âYou wonât get back to the future without me, chief.â
âPerhaps Iâm not bothered,â said Will. âPerhaps I like it here. Iâm used to it now, and frankly, itâs better than the time I come from. Much more exciting.â
âCome off it, chief. You donât mean that really.â
âMaybe I do, maybe I donât, but I wonât be bullied by you. Since Iâve put myself in charge, Iâve found out all manner of things. I think Iâll just carry on doing things my way.â
âThen weâre all doomed,â said Barry.
âWhat was that?â Will asked.
âI said, âthen weâre all doomedâ, as it happens.â
âWeâll see,â said Will. âWeâll see.â
